This month has been a whirlwind of activity on the farm. Our teen teacher finished her first year of high school and played her first solo in her Spring Violin Recital! We are so proud of how hard she worked this year, in her studies and her dedication to our riding students!
As usual when the weather starts to dry out you can often find us working on farm improvements. This spring held to that standard with some big updates: new fencing for the paddock & dry-lot, new goat run, & new chicken and duck yards. Lots of hard work by the whole family! We are happy with how everything is working now!
The Spring Season also brought us two new barn kittens (adorable!) we got from a neighbor, 4 new ducklings (incubator-hatched from our flock), and sadly the loss of two laying ducks. After losing our only two laying hens we decided to adopt two new ducks from a local farm and we hope to see some eggs soon! Miraculously our Drake is getting along with them just fine after a week or so. Farms often face the cycle of life (and nature's food chain) and not only did we lose two ducks (one to a raven and one to a coyote), but we also lost all but two of our chickens over a period of a week. Including our rooster! Very sad and frustrating but something most chicken farmers are all-too acquainted with. Thankfully we found a local chicken-mama who sold us a lovely variety of pullets and with the chicken yard newly predator-proofed, we hope they live happy, long lives.
Until next time, carry-on <3
